Global Learning Experiences

During my time at Florida International University I had the pleasure of experiencing memorable moments and I decided to share them.

Millennium Fellowship

From August through December of 2023, I participated in the fellowship. The Millennium fellowship program is partnered with the United Nations Academy Impact and its main goal is to empower university students to make a positive impact in their community by providing them the opportunity to create a project based on the 13 Sustainable Developmental Goals (SDG). Through the experience, you learn leadership skills, teamwork, and how to make connections that can help you in creating your project. My project was based on the 3rd SDG well-being for all at all ages and the goal of my project was to create a framework of a website providing resources and bringing awareness to mental health illnesses.

R.E.A.D.Y Lab

I volunteered as a research assistant at FIU R.E.A.D.Y (Readiness Interventions to Improve Early Academic and Disruptive Behaviors in Young Children) lab by Dr. Hart in the summer and fall of 2023. The lab's main objective promote school readiness in young children at risk so that all children start school ready to learn. They have many different programs and I happened to be a part of the summer program where I organized the forms for the parents, prepared kits for the tutors, and assisted with supplies needed for the classrooms. In the fall I inputted the data of the results that were obtained from the summer program.

Global Ties

Through the global learning department, I was given the opportunity to be a part of a discussion about the importance of global learning and its relevance in our world. The panel consisted of various U.S. Policy visitors from different parts of the world who came together through global ties as well as Dr. Hilary Landorf (Director of Global Learning Initiatives) to start the conversation about the importance of global learning. I as well as other students part of GL programs gave our inputs of our experiences around global issues. We also discussed what global learning means to us and how it is expressed in other parts of the world.

Tuesday Times Roundtables

Being a part of Tuesday Times Roundtables presented by FIU's Global Learning who collaborated with The New York Times allowed me to become more aware and learn about topics I wasn't exposed to before and learn about opportunities that are out there for students. Through these discussions, I learned about the Millennium fellowship, the importance of language from a global perspective, health equity, and many more things that helped me become a global learner and have more awareness of other issues in the world.
